Why the Nonce Matters in Proof of Work
The nonce is what makes proof-of-work provably expensive. Because hash functions are unpredictable, there is no shortcut to finding a valid nonce — miners must try billions of values through brute force. This computational cost is what secures the blockchain against tampering.
